A new “Wikibook” has appeared on the subject of consciousness. Is the SCR forum up to it?
Wikibooks are electronic books that are part of the Wikimedia program of Open Publishing. The book can be found at:
The book is freely available on the Internet and in my opinion it is a remarkably wide ranging attempt at describing the field of consciousness studies. However, the book is online so you can see for yourself.
A most interesting aspect of this book is that anyone can contribute to it. This sounds like a recipe for disaster but surprisingly this does not happen in Open Publishing. The most advanced Open Publishing project is the Internet encyclopedia called Wikipedia and this is now the most popular site on the Internet for factual content. Wikipedia first appeared in 2001. It has gained spectacular momentum in the past 18 months and is now being visited over 500,000 times a day! (see this page) . Wikibooks are a recent addition to the Wikimedia project and in the next two to three years may well undergo the exponential growth of Wikipedia.
Few people could be better qualified to edit this book than the subscribers to SCR so why not have a go?
